A TOAST TO HARD TIMES

It has been some time since I’ve taken up the pen on behalf of this column. It’s not for lack of perching, although like most Americans that have been impacted by the economic upheaval of the past year much of my public perching has been replaced with more affordable evenings at home, sitting quietly at the small bar in my living room. The late night silence, with a scotch in hand, brings some degree of comfort after listening to the seemingly endless stream of disheartening news from near and far that now permeates our lives.

Earlier this evening I poured my wife and I a drink, and raising my glass to hers I said, “A toast to hard times.”

She questioned my capitulation to reality this early into the New Year. Normally I can rationalize a bad hand or bluff the other people at the table into believing that everything is just wonderful for at least the first six months of any given year, but here I was folding eight days into January. She was extremely concerned about my apparent lack of hope.

I assured her that all was not doomed, but the time had surely come to raise a glass to our fears and woes. Because the source of our happiness and the solution to our sorrows are one and the same.

The next toast…the next smile…the next embrace

On behalf of the talented and generous souls that produce American Public House Review-
We wish you health, happiness and good fortune throughout 2009!
